The best thing about being on your own is trying new things. For example, who knew coconut could be so gross? I know this is gross but, I can eat it right out of the bag. I love the flaky and light taste and when Mom was baking countless cakes for weddings, it was a special treat to sneak a pinch of coconut.
First example of my dedication. When I was in hells calling of boy scouts, we had my first roundtable to plan. The theme was awesome, it was Chinese New Year so how could one NOT get excited? I started envisioning Chinese lanterns and cool invitations, along with scrumptious Chinese food of course. So we came to the conclusion that we would have teriaki chicken with rice. A simple yet tasty meal. However, something atrocious happened so quickly it was like my beautiful Chinese New Year plan was being raped before my eyes. SOMEONE, then decided that it would be "cooler" to have Chinese Sundays aka Hawaiian haystacks. No joke. Think about it...
Teriaki chicken with rice:
-Chicken
-Rice
-Teriaki sauce
Hawaiian Haystacks
-Rice
-Chicken
-chicken sauce
-cheese
-olives
-chow mien noodles
-green onions
-tomatoes
-coconut
-peanuts
-every other topping known to man
I don't really try to understand the thinking of others but to me, the logic seemed quite clear. However, some good came of these Chinese haystacks. Leftovers. Tyler and I jump at any moment for free food. We don't go wild and stuff chips in my purse and cookies in our pockets but you get the idea. Lo and behold, the coconut bag was placed into my care. bliss.
So, back to the main story. Tyler and I were shopping and decided to splurge and get a real life coconut. So I waited until the time was right to enjoy this coconut and finally the day came. Of course we had to do this right so we got our drill and bored a hole into the coconut and drained out the water. After 2 cups of water we pounded away at the coconut until it opened. It was just as anyone would imagine.
The true test began. We chipped away a big piece for both of us and chewed. It is hard to describe the taste that filled our mouths; a bland yet green taste with a very very almost unrecognizable taste of coconut. Well, who ares about that, we want to taste the water of course. So Tyler and I each poured a bit into a glass and it was bon appetite from there. It tasted like what I would imagine the milk during the Dust Bowl to taste like; watered down, two week old milk that was bitter.
So, not knowing what to do with it, we placed our so called "splurge" back into the refrigerator and sadly returned to our normal lives. So much for adventure, from now on, I'll take the stuff in the bag.
